The Federal Trunk Road Act (FStrG) regulates the division of roads under the auspices of the Federal Republic of Germany . According to Section 1 (2) FStrG, the federal highways and the federal highways with the respective through-roads are considered to be federal highways .

The FStrG belongs to the regulatory matter of road law and does not contain any regulations of its own on road traffic law (otherwise: Road Traffic Act , Road Traffic Regulations, etc.)

According to the FStrG, the property of a road as a federal trunk road is determined by dedication .

The road construction load is generally with the federal government. Exceptions apply to local through traffic by municipal bodies with a population of more than 80,000. In Section 5 (4) FStrG, the course of the road within the closed location is referred to as the through-town .

In § 9 FStrG are growing restrictions or bans regulated for structures to be built within certain distances on federal highways. This regulation is also known as cultivation freedom .

The intersection of public roads and federal trunk roads with bodies of water (right of intersection ) is regulated in § 12 ff. FStrG.

Due to § 19 FStrG, expropriations are possible; the expropriation law (and thus Art. 14 para. 3 GG sufficient) Junktim in § 19a regulated FStrG with regard to the various national laws, expropriation laws.

The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is responsible for the federal trunk roads . Pursuant to Article 90, Paragraph 2, Sentence 2 of the Basic Law, administrative responsibility as contract administration rests with the states . From January 1, 2021, the federal highways will be administered by the Federal Highway Authority and the Autobahn GmbH itself.

The Federal Trunk Road Act was constitutionally required due to Article 90 of the Basic Law.
