The connecting canal to the leash (VKL), formerly also leash connecting duct or leash descending duct, connects the Mittelland Canal with the leash . It is a federal waterway for which the Braunschweig Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible. In contrast to the other connecting canals of the Mittelland Canal (MLK), it does not branch off directly from the Mittelland Canal, but from the Hanover-Linden branch canal . The line descent lock is located within the canal ; it enables the descent from the level of the MLK to the level of the stowed line. Today the canal is only used by passenger ships and pleasure boats; in the past it served as a connection to the factories, which have long since disappeared, at the level of today's Ihme Center .

The connecting canal to the Leine branches off from the Hannover-Linden branch canal at km 8.46 . From the junction between the districts of Ahlem and Leinhausen, it runs to the southeast, in the direction of Limmer. After a distance of about 1.6 kilometers, the connecting canal flows into the headwater of the Leine weir in Limmer at Leine-km 22.29. Shortly before the confluence, the canal is spanned by a filigree pedestrian bridge from 1915. The riveted steel girder construction with sandstone bridgeheads is part of the lock path that connects Limmer with Herrenhausen. The historic Ernst-August-Schleuse and the Wasserkunst are located at the northern end of the crossing . The Leine is navigable from there to the mouth of the Ihme , which in turn can be navigated to the Schnellen Graben .
