The Merited Coach of the USSR was a state award in the Soviet Union . The honorary title was introduced on March 24, 1956 by the State Committee on Physical Culture and Sport at the Council of Ministers of the USSR . It was awarded to trainers for outstanding achievements in the development of modern training methods as well as the training and support of athletes in the high-performance area. The award took the form of a badge with a certificate. In August 1956, the first list of 53 coaches was published in the Soviet press . Around 900 titles had been awarded by 1975, 22 of which were given to chess coaches.
