The Association for the Protection of the Mountains (VzSB) is a nature conservation association in Bavaria. It was founded in 1900, making it one of the oldest nature conservation organizations in the Alpine region . Its approximately 1,100 members include over 250 sections of the German Alpine Club (DAV) , the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV) and the Alpine Club South Tyrol (AVS) as well as other alpine-related and nature conservation-oriented associations and institutions. The VzSB is a member association of the German Nature Conservation Ring and the International Alpine Protection Commission CIPRA Germany .

history

The VzSB was founded in 1900 as an association for the protection and care of alpine plants from the German and Austrian Alpine Association by the pharmacist Carl Schmolz, in 1912 in the Association for the Protection of Alpine Plants , in 1934 in the Association for the Protection of Alpine Plants and Animals and in 1976 in Renamed the Association for the Protection of the Mountains (VzSB) .

Goal setting

The VzSB saw and sees it as its task to emphasize nature conservation in the Alpine region and to initiate and accompany natural developments. In 1910, his commitment led to the "Plant Protection District Berchtesgaden Alps" (83 km²), the first larger plant reserve in the Alpine region. This reserve was the nucleus of the Königssee nature reserve (1921, 200 km²) and in 1978 ultimately led to the establishment of today's Berchtesgaden National Park, which covers 208 km². Specifically, the association strives to protect nature and the landscape from harmful and destructive interventions, and especially the mountains, in accordance with its statutes.

“The purpose of the association is to promote the protection of nature and the landscape, especially the mountains. The association wants to contribute to the preservation, care and restoration of the uniqueness, beauty and originality with its natural diversity of wild animal and plant species, including their habitats. The association also wants to contribute to maintaining or restoring the efficiency and functionality of the ecosystem. One focus is the promotion of knowledge about alpine plants and animals and their habitats and their respective functions in the natural balance. "

Conservation projects

Even before the First World War, the association took the initiative to put the Alpine protection movement on an international basis. This idea contributed significantly to the founding of the Commission Internationale pour la Protection des Alpes ( CIPRA ) in 1952, the first international association of non-governmental Alpine protection organizations.

The association was also involved in the discussion about the Bavarian Alpine Plan that began in 1968 . The association published the first draft of the Alpine Plan by Helmut Karl in its 1968 yearbook. In 1972, the Alpine Plan became part of the Bavarian State Development Program.

Focus of work

The association is recognized according to § 63 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act in Bavaria, i. i.e., a nature conservation association authorized to participate. He is active in numerous committees, e.g. B. in the nature conservation councils. In the media and with his publications, he influences current developments and conflicts, but also basic questions of nature conservation.

An essential area of responsibility is the dissemination of well-founded knowledge about the mountains. Since 1901 , the VzSB has been publishing an annual yearbook on nature conservation topics in the Alpine region and the mountain world. The spectrum of topics in the yearbooks ranges from scientific treatises on ecological and natural history aspects in the mountains to botanical and vegetation issues. The different publisher names of the publication series are due to the various name changes of the association:

  • Report of the Association for the Protection and Care of Alpine Plants 1 (1901) to 11 (1912)
  • Report of the Association for the Protection of Alpine Plants 12 (1913) to 18 (1928)
  • Yearbook of the Association for the Protection of Alpine Plants 1 (1929) to 6 (1934)
  • Yearbook of the Association for the Protection of Alpine Plants and Animals 7 (1935) to 41 (1976)
  • News from the Association for the Protection of Alpine Plants and Animals 1936–1941, 1943–1944, 1949
  • Yearbook of the Association for the Protection of the Mountains 42 (1977) to 82 (2017)

With the exception of the current years, the publications are available online on the association's homepage.

In addition, the association looks after a botanical garden in the Kaiser Mountains / Tyrol - the Vorderkaiserfelden Alpine Plant Garden . The alpine plant garden was laid out in 1930 and has been maintained and cared for by VzSB since then, mainly on a voluntary basis . Over 300 plant species from the Alpine region can be seen in a near-natural environment on an area of around 600 m² - mainly from the montane and subalpine vegetation levels of the Kaiser Mountains. The alpine plant garden is located in the immediate vicinity of the Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte in the Zahmer Kaiser and is open from mid-May to October, depending on the snow conditions.

A poster published by the VzSB about the protected alpine plants also serves to educate and convey knowledge about alpine vegetation . The poster is a joint effort of the association together with the German Alpine Association (DAV), the Austrian Alpine Association (ÖAV) and the Alpine Association South Tyrol (AVS). The first version of the poster appeared in 1903 and is currently being published for the seventh time. Sabine Rösler, who holds a doctorate in biology, has been the chairwoman of the VzSB since November 2018.
