history

In the last national legislative elections to the Ethiopian federal parliament, on May 15, 2005, the United Ethiopian Democratic Party / Medhin was one of the member parties within the party and electoral alliance of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy ( Qinijit ), which together have 109 seats in the won a possible 527 seats in the People's House of Representatives . The United Ethiopian Democratic Party / Medhin itself received a total of 36 parliamentary seats with 6.84% of the total vote, 34 of which were given to men and only 2 to women. In spite of all this, on October 5, 2005, the party's central committee decided to leave the coalition for unity and democracy .

The decision of party president Lidetu Ayalew that the bloc of the United Ethiopian Democratic Party / Medhin won the entire parliamentary seats - which were given to the coalition for unity and democracy - led to criticism and internal disputes within the coalition after the 2005 parliamentary elections. Lidetu Ayalew has been described as a spy for the Tigray People's Liberation Front , a party that leads the Ethiopian ruling coalition Revolutionary Democratic Front of the Ethiopian Peoples .
