The Vereinigte Hamburger Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft eG (vhw) is one of the larger rental companies in Hamburg and the surrounding area.

history

Workers and non-self-employed craftsmen based in Wilhelmsburg founded the Wilhelmsburger Spar- und Bauverein eG in 1894 to counteract social misery, housing shortages and arbitrary rent increases. In 1921 the Bauverein Hamm-Geest eG was founded by police officers in Hamburg-Hamm with similar goals . In 1981 both merged to form the United Hamburg Housing Cooperative.

Business activity

The vhw has around 15,000 members, making it one of the largest Hamburg housing associations. The operative business activities are carried out by the business areas Living and Living in Old Age. The portfolio of the residential division includes around 6,900 apartments. The housing stock is spread over the Hamburg city area, with a focus on Wilhelmsburg, Hamm and Eimsbüttel.

Since 1970, vhw has also been active in the area of ​​housing and care and nursing services for senior citizens. In the vhw living in old age division, around 940 flats / apartments in service living and senior residences as well as around 740 inpatient nursing homes are managed. In 1994 an outpatient service was established.

An annual average of around 850 employees work for vhw and its subsidiaries. Every year around 40 apprentices begin their training to become geriatric nurses or real estate agents at vhw. The entrepreneurial focus is currently on the modernization of the housing stock.
