Parliamentary elections 2005

In the parliamentary elections in Iraq on January 30, 2005 , the United Iraqi Alliance, with 4.075 million voters, received 48.1 percent of the vote and with 140 out of 275 members, it was the strongest group in the transitional parliament.

The Shiite majority hoped that the Shiite Alliance would take over power from which it was excluded during the rule of former President Saddam Hussein, who belonged to the Sunni minority, and his Arab-socialist Ba'ath party . The Grand Ayatollah Ali as-Sistani plays a decisive role . As-Sistani was born in Iran but lived in Iraq for over 50 years. He achieved a high reputation among Iraqi Shiites in the 1990s . His criticism of the US plans for Iraq made him even more popular in Iraq. Some Shiite preachers call it a religious duty to vote for the electoral alliance accepted by as-Sistani. The UIA has an influential advocate in the Shiite Grand Ayatollah Ali as-Sistani, but none of the parties expressly supports him.

The UIA's list also includes the Shiite nuclear scientist Husain asch-Shahristani , who was allegedly placed in a high position on the list of candidates on the instructions of as-Sistani himself.

In the parliamentary elections on December 15, 2005, the United Alliance received 5 million votes (41.1%) and thus had 128 seats in parliament.

General election 2010

In the parliamentary elections in 2010 , the Dawa party under Prime Minister Al-Maliki split from the alliance and took part in the elections under the rule of law alliance . The National Alliance became the third largest party in parliament with 70 seats. In May, the two alliances formed a parliamentary bloc.

The strongest force within the alliance are the Saderists, who were able to unite 39 of the 70 seats. The Supreme Council is the second largest party with 17 seats.
