history

The Fasnachtsgesellschaft was founded in 1884 through the merger of the Tambouren-Verein Kleinbasel and the Basler Gewerbeverein as an all-male society and was chosen as the United Kleinbasler . The reason for the establishment of the VKB was, among other things, the award of the Carnival trains introduced by the Quodlibet (forerunner of today's Carnival Comitée) in the year it was founded. In the hope of achieving the highest possible rating, they formed a common platoon. The bill worked out perfectly. The VKB achieved the best award with the second prize. The strict jury did not award a first prize, which is why it is unclear.

In contrast to today's trains, in 1884 they were content with painting their faces and wearing appropriate uniforms . The larvae , which are now called traditional, were not yet carried back then. A large number of riders and horse-drawn carriages were part of the appearance of the VKB train. In 1885 the train had no fewer than seven cars.

The Young Guard was founded in 1934, followed by the Old Guard in 1939. In the following five years, there was no carnival due to the Second World War .

Shortly after the war, the fourth train, the VKB-Binggis, was launched in 1949.

In 2007 the VKB Carnival was overshadowed by a tragic accident when a six-year-old boy from the VKB Binggis was run over by a wagon on Wednesday afternoon and died shortly afterwards from his injuries. According to the Comité, it was the first documented accident at the Basel Carnival in which an active carnival person died. The accident triggered an unprecedented wave of condolences and condolences from all ranks of the Basel Carnival. At the scene of the accident, Barfüsserplatz , countless carnival people and passers-by laid flowers, soft toys and candles, but also larvae, drumsticks and Läckerli drums. In the middle was a VKB lantern with a black ribbon.

VKB today

Since a turbulent General Assembly in 2004, girls have also been able to join the United Little Baslers. It has been possible for adult women to join the parent club or Alti Garde since January 1, 2012.

There are the VKB-Binggis junior groups for the youngest carnival enthusiasts aged 8-11 and the Young Guard (12-17 years), the Tribe (from 18 years) and the Old Guard for older members who prefer a more leisurely Carnival.
