The company also has a state-recognized institute for basic, advanced and advanced training in care for the elderly, the Nursing Academy. The school was founded in 1968, making it the second oldest in Hessen.

Foundation purpose

The purpose of the non-profit foundation is the demanding care of elderly and old people while respecting their dignity and personality. The focus is on the individual needs of the residents, their living conditions, but also their past (biography). The diaconal idea should be implemented in the foundation and filled with life. A self-determined lifestyle is made possible by caring for people.

The history of the foundation

The history of the "United Martin Luther + Althanauer Hospital Foundation Hanau" began in 1880 with the establishment of the first deaconry for home nursing in the old town of Hanau. This project was realized through the commitment of the pastor and superintendent Ernst Wilhelm Christian Sopp (1829–1904). The citizens of the heavily industrialized city of Hanau often had only limited resources for medical treatment. The people, who mostly came from poor backgrounds, were therefore at the mercy of their fate in the event of illness. Thus, the goal of Pastor Ernst Sopp was clear: to reduce the greatest social and health need through financial aid for medication, food and clothing.

The establishment of the Diakoniestation should solve these problems. The sisters trained by their mother houses had the task of providing adequate home care and social assistance. However, no financial means were available for this project, so Pastor Sopp presented his plans to presbyteries and parish priests and was able to set up the first Diakoniestation with two deaconesses from Frankfurt through donations and collections . In order to meet the increasing need for care, a Diakoniehaus was opened as a clinic in October 1888. Seven deaconesses looked after the sick on wards here. In the course of just two years, the number of inpatients tripled. As a result, the Diakoniehaus was expanded to a total of 50 care places in 1891/1892. The next increase in capacity took place around the turn of the year 1904/1905.

The foundation in the war years

At the beginning of the First World War, the deaconess home served as a military hospital for the war wounded and sick. The deaconesses kept the organizational management of the house. In 1927 Richard Fleischhauer took over the medical management of the hospital. This ended the previous status as an affiliated hospital. In 1929 a nursing home and a nursing school were added to the hospital. At that time, the deaconess home was able to admit 220 inpatients, who were cared for by 45 nurses and 30 domestic workers. The following specialist-led stations were available: Internal and nervous diseases, surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, ear, nose and throat medicine, ophthalmology and pediatrics.

In 1932 the deaconess home was given a new name and has since been called the "Gustav Adolf Hospital". As in the First World War, it also served as a military hospital in the Second. In 1945 the building was destroyed.

Reconstruction and development of the foundation

In the largely destroyed city of Hanau, people lived among the ruins and in poorly prepared apartments, the old and the sick were largely left to their own devices. The pastor at that time took the initiative in the post-war years and without further ado rented a villa in Hochstädter Landstrasse (Hanau-Wilhelmsbad), which he named "Waldfrieden". Together with the returned sisters, he set up an old people's home for 35 people in need of care.

At the same time, a newly convened foundation board, consisting of Pastor Göckel, Pastor Boos, Dr. Kleinemann and Dr. Helmet to rebuild the deaconess home. Instead of the “Gustav Adolf Hospital”, however, an old people's home was initially to be built, as the need for this was greater. The long-term goal, however, was still to rebuild a hospital. In July 1953 the first old people's home called “Katharinenstift” was completed and offered space for 60 people in need of care, four years later the “Gustav Adolf Home” was opened with 56 places. Both institutions were located in what is now the "Martin Luther facility", where the foundation still has its main administrative headquarters today.

For this now larger retirement home operation, the diaconal institution was recognized by the Hessian Ministry of Justice as a “Mild Foundation” and was henceforth called the “Martin Luther Foundation”. The third construction project of the Martin Luther Foundation was the construction of the "Wichernhaus" in 1961. With the "Albert-Schweitzer-Haus", the next new building was built in 1968, in 1973 the "Albert-Schweitzer-Haus" and the "Gustav -Adolf-Heim ”. In the Martin Luther facility there is also a rehabilitation center with its own exercise pool and the Nursing Academy, the foundation's own institute for basic, advanced and advanced training in care for the elderly.

In 2014 the "Martin Luther Foundation" merged with the "Althanauer Hospital Foundation Hanau". Since then it has been called the “United Martin Luther + Althanauer Hospital Foundation Hanau”.
