Company history

Gilded in Neu-Ulm
Vergölst in Hanover

The company was founded by Hubert Vergölst in Aachen in 1926 as a vulcanization company for the tread renewal of vehicle tires. The operation in Aachen with branches in Belgium was destroyed in the Second World War. After the end of the war, Hubert Vergölst ventured a fresh start in Steinfurth near Bad Nauheim and started producing retreaded tires in 1946. The first documented Vergölst customer is the Licher private brewery .

In 1948 Hubert Vergölst converted the company into a GmbH , in 1949 the first contacts were made with Continental AG as the largest supplier of vulcanization material. In 1956 the establishment of a sales organization for service stations began, and the first Vergölst factory branch was opened in Frankfurt am Main. In 1961 Hubert Vergölst handed over the management to the previous commercial director Fritz Peters. At the same time, Continental took over shares in the Vergölst company as a silent partner . As a result, the number of branches was increased further: in 1966 there were already 83 branches and 35 general agencies, in 1976 146 specialist companies throughout Germany. In 1974, Continental announced its 100 percent stake in Vergölst.

In 1977 the first joint branding was created for the meanwhile 160 service stations. Uniform appearance under the umbrella brand "V-Reifen-Service" with a comic rabbit as an advertising figure should make the company even more well known as a tire service chain. A training center was opened in Bad Nauheim for quality assurance .

In 1978 the company started its own truck tire breakdown service . Large national or European truck fleets have since received breakdown assistance around the clock. This service was gradually expanded to include a mobile service on site at the customer's premises.

Especially after the reunification in 1990, the branch network continued to grow; in 1991 there were already 213 specialist companies at 201 locations across Germany. At that time the umbrella brand was called Vergölst, expanded to include tire service accessories.

In 1996 the Vergölst companies began to expand their range of workshop services, especially repairs. In 1999, 87 percent of all Vergölst businesses already offered this service.

The growing number of franchising partners, some of which operated under the name Vergölst and some under their own name, led to the establishment of the “FranchiseServiceGesellschaft” (F / S / G) in 1996 to support these partners. After F / S / G had grown strongly through new acquisitions, it was reintegrated into Vergölst in 2002. In 1998 Vergölst split into two independently operating companies within the group, "Vergölst GmbH" as a retail chain with headquarters in Hanover and "Vergölst Runderneuerungs GmbH & Co. KG" as a manufacturer of retreaded tires, which remained at the Bad Nauheim location until 2001 and then was closed. As before, "Vergölst GmbH" has a 90 percent share in the company Reifen-Apel (tire and car service and production of retreaded commercial vehicle tires) based in Korbach .

Todays situation

Today, Vergölst is represented by more than 450 companies across Germany, around half of which are partner companies in the franchise system. The branch and franchise network employs over 2,500 people. Vergölst and ADAC have been working closely together in the truck service sector since 1990. The 100 or so breakdown service vehicles were used over 30,000 times in 2015 as breakdown assistance for trucks with damaged tires.

The notoriety of the brand Vergölst is, according to one of the German Association for tire shops and Vulkaniseur craft commissioned (BRV) and the market research institute GfK study, more than 60 percent.
