past and present
Past and present. Monthly for History Lessons and Political Education (VuG) was a magazine for history teachers that was published from 1911 to 1944 by Teubner Verlag in Leipzig.
The founding fathers were the Leipzig senior teachers Fritz Friedrich and Paul Rühlmann , who were also significantly involved in the founding of the " Association of German History Teachers " in 1913 . The VuG became an association magazine that also allowed controversial positions: for example, on the Franco-German relationship or the Weimar Republic . From 1922 to 1933 Friedrich was the sole editor, in 1931 the historian Wilhelm Mommsen joined. The historians Franz Schnabel and Percy Ernst Schramm were among the authors.
From January 1934, the National Socialist association chairmen Moritz Edelmann and Wilhelm Mommsen headed the editorial team. Mommsen was ousted in 1937 by the National Socialists Karl Alnor and Ulrich Crämer . From 1940 to 1944 Hans Tümmler , a former lecturer at the University for Teacher Education in Frankfurt / Oder and headmaster in Erfurt, took over the management. The VuG represented National Socialist content at this time . In 1936 the first article on the Jewish question by Wilhelm Grau appeared . Among others, Rudolf Benze and Leo Gruenberg wrote articles.
