The industrial railway Nievenheim-Zons is active in the freight traffic in the area of today's city of Dormagen .

history

Even before the First World War , there were considerations to build a small railway to develop a new industrial area in the area of the then city of Zons and the mayor's office of Nievenheim near the federal highway 9 and the Rhine . As early as 1911, the plans were partially implemented. The company Höttger & Waldhausen, Frankfurt intended to build an impregnation plant on a 100 hectare site. Together with the municipality of Nievenheim and the city of Zons, she founded the Nievenheim-Zons industrial railway. Construction of the railway systems could begin in 1911. In the same year, the newly established companies Nievenheimer Steinzeugwerke , Nievenheimer Industrieziegelei and Rheinisch- Nassauische Bergwerks- und Hütten AG were connected - the latter had been owned by Stolberger Zink AG for mining and metallurgy since 1926 . After the connecting line to Nievenheim station had been completed, the industrial connecting line was able to begin its delivery and collection service on October 12, 1912. In the years that followed, other subscribers were added, but the company ran into economic difficulties after the First World War . The connectees then formed a joint venture and founded a GmbH in 1924 . In 1925 the Höttger & Waldhausen company was transferred to the Rütgerswerke AG . In 1927 they sold their shares to the municipality of Nievenheim and the city of Zons, which were each half the sole shareholders.

In 1928 the company built a locomotive shed for two locomotives in Delrath . Two years later, a few more rooms were created for the company's management. On December 31, 1931, the GmbH founded in 1924 was dissolved by the operating group, and the industrial railway Nievenheim-Zons took over the railway operations itself again. The economic upswing that was now evident in the small railroad continued: in 1934 a second locomotive was purchased, and a transport record was set in 1939, which was only exceeded in 1983. Shortly before the end of the Second World War , operations had to be stopped due to enemy bombing raids on the railway systems.

From 1945

The war damage could be repaired quickly, and in 1945 the industrial railway had to make its vehicles available to the Reichsbahn free of charge under pressure from the military government. In 1946 the railway was able to resume regular operations. In 1945 only 1,176 wagons were transported, in 1946 there were even 3,758 wagons. In 1950 the first post-war record was set with 18,335 wagons and 345,651 tons of transported freight .

In the 1960s, the Nievenheim-Zons industrial railway was able to win new customers, among others with the United Aluminum Werke AG , the Alu-Norf GmbH and the agricultural products company Schillings . A new technical era was heralded on October 1, 1962 with the electrification of the Nievenheim transfer station. In 1965, the Nievenheim-Zons industrial railway received its first diesel locomotive. A second diesel locomotive followed two years later.

With the municipal reorganization in 1975, the city of Zons and the municipality of Nievenheim came to the city of Dormagen, which is 100% sole owner of the railway. In 1980 the industrial railway was able to win another major customer with AEG Telefunken. In 1984 the industrial railway exceeded its 1939 result with 580,180 tons with 524,272 tons, and in 1986 it had 15 connected customers. In the same year, the flourishing business celebrated its 75th anniversary.

In 1992 the locomotive shed in Delrath was expanded and a new administration building was built.

Verkehrsgesellschaft Dormagen mbH (VGD)

The Verkehrsgesellschaft Dormagen mbH (VGD) was founded on July 1, 1995. This includes the Zons-Nievenheim industrial railway and the Dormagen city bus . The shareholders' meeting of Industriebahn Zons-Nievenheim GmbH was transferred to the new supervisory body, the municipal committee of Verkehrsgesellschaft Dormagen mbH (VGD committee).

In the 1990s, the Zons-Nievenheim industrial railway received a third diesel locomotive.

The one million annual tonnage mark was exceeded in 2003.

Ports and Freight Transport Cologne AG

In 2005, the industrial railway was sold to the ports and goods traffic Cologne AG (HGK) in order to counteract an expected deficit of 5.3 million euros in the city budget.

Nine trains are run every day on the approximately ten-kilometer route. With seven employees, more than 40,000 freight wagons are transported every year. (As of 2010)
