Djóni was the son of Anna Elisabeth Sofie Andreasdatter from Kollafjørður and Poul Isaksen from Tórshavn. Like many Faroese, he took a surname that refers to a specific place. "Í Geil" means "in the path" or "in the course" and refers to a certain path. He was married to Anna Elisabeth, geb. Holm from Tórshavn.

Djóni í Geil was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dúgvan from 1899–1907 , and member of the Løgting from 1882–1885, 1887–1899 and 1901–06 . Djóni í Geil was directly elected candidate from the constituency of South Streymoy .

Djóna í Geilgøta street in Tórshavn is named after him.
