history

The Prince-Bishop of Seckau Ferdinand Stanislaus Pawlikowski founded the Diocesan Museum with the theologian and lecturer for ecclesiastical art history and archeology at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz Johannes Mandl in 1932.

The museum was set up in three chapels one above the other (including the Barbara Chapel) at Graz Cathedral . From 1938 the museum was closed for political reasons. In 1948 it was reopened after the war damage had been repaired. In 1974 the museum moved to the Minorite Monastery in Graz , where it was at home until 2009. Today the museum is located in the listed, former Jesuit college , today's seminary at Bürgergasse 2 in the inner city .
