The feeling of abandonment , also known as loneliness, loneliness or isolation , occurs in particular in connection with human losses, separation , dying and death of most important caregivers (life partners, parents, children, closest confidants, spiritual leaders ). It is an expression of an often elementary disturbance of the mental equilibrium, which was based on an intensive connection with another person, his constant real or spiritual existence, his irreplaceable importance for one's own balance as a conversation partner , as an addressee of intimate thoughts or its importance as a spiritual orientation point .

Separation experience

A feeling of almost unbearable abandonment arises through separation experiences in love relationships , when fatal accidents or incurable illnesses fall in the initial period of greatest infatuation. But even the death of a long-term partner in old age sometimes seems to make it impossible to continue living. An apparently self-evident and enthusiastic activity can only be continued mechanically or is dropped completely, areas of life are neglected and wither away when the decisive person in whose presence “things shone” no longer exists.

The social nature of the human being is responsible for the feeling of abandonment in its different manifestations, who can lead a meaningful life only in direct cooperation or with regard to other people. The narrower the interpersonal basis is formed due to one's own character or special living conditions, the more difficult it is to make necessary adjustments after losses. Some people feel that they will lose all loved ones and that it is their fate to be abandoned or to be left alone.

Depression and anxiety

In medicine, abandonment depression is a symptom that can occur particularly in children, but also in adults, as a result of being abandoned. In children, such a separation can also create a form of hospitalism . The feeling of abandonment is associated with a crisis of meaning or a permanent emptying of meaning and corresponds to the loss of spiritual and spiritual home . Adults often tend to withdraw from society and become depressed ( depression ). In relation to the personality disorder known as "borderline", there is a desperate effort to protect oneself from being abandoned, either actually or feared. The depression of abandonment is accompanied by a complex of different affects that can lead to rage, panic helplessness, complete hopelessness, inner emptiness and an existential feeling of deficiency.

The fear of being abandoned or left alone is viewed in particular as a feeling of separation fear , for example the absence of presence signals from a caregiver. This condition, which is biologically one of the primal fears, serves the purpose of not losing or reestablishing contact with the safe base that is essential for survival. It is expressed, especially in young children, through behaviors such as crying or screaming. Fears of abandonment also include feelings of jealousy and the associated fear of separation.

Godforsakenness

Sometimes people also feel abandoned in their faith and by God through personal loss. An early example of this form of forsaken God is provided by the crucified Jesus of Nazareth , whose last words, which he uttered in the face of death, were reproduced in the account of the Passion by Mark as follows.

“Eloi, eloi, lama sabachtani? My god, my god, why did you leave me?"

- Mark 15/34: Psalm 22

The terms “absence” and “hiddenness” in connection with the experience of divine closeness are already contrasted with “forsaken by God” in the Old Testament. This symbolizes the lack of any experience of saving closeness to God. The Old Testament describes several times a condition in which God “hides his face” or “turns his face away” from the believer who turns away from himself.
