The Vermont Railway ( VTR ) is a local railway company in Vermont and New York ( United States ). It operates a 212-kilometer railroad line along Vermont's western border. The company is based in Burlington .

The train is part of the Vermont Rail System (VRS) network, which includes the VTR, the Green Mountain Railroad , the Washington County Railroad , the Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad and the New York and Ogdensburg Railway in New York. The Vermont Railway was founded on October 25, 1963 and began operations on January 6, 1964 on the former route of the Rutland Railway from Burlington to Bennington with a branch to Hoosick Junction in New York. After the shutdown of the Rutland, the state of Vermont bought the line and has leased it to the Vermont Railway ever since.

In 1972 VTR acquired Clarendon & Pittsford. In 1997 the Vermont Rail System was founded with the purchase of the Green Mountain Railroad, to which the Washington County Railroad could be added in 2000 and the New York & Ogdensburg in 2002. All participating railway companies are still managed independently as subsidiaries of VTR.

In 2007, the VTR had eight EMD diesel locomotives available, namely two GP38-2 , one GP38 , one GP40 , one GP40-2 , two GP40-2LW and one GP18 .
