The Berlin Insurance Company was founded in July 1945 as a uniform institution for all social security in Greater Berlin . For the first time in Germany, accident , health and pension insurance were in the hands of one institution .

The driving force behind the founding of VAB was Ernst Schellenberg . The first chairman of the board was Ottomar Geschke .

The VAB was split into an East and a West Berlin VAB in January 1949. In East Berlin, the VAB was subordinated to the FDGB in the mid- 1950s . As the social insurance of the FDGB , it was the statutory health, accident and pension insurance for workers and employees in the GDR . In West Berlin it existed until the end of the 1950s, but in the end it was only responsible for health insurance ( Krankenversicherungsanstalt Berlin KVAB ).
