Sunken castle in Dubringer Moor

The Sunken Castle in Dubringer Moor is a square hill from the time of the Billendorfer culture .

location

The facility is located one kilometer northeast of the village of Dubring , district of Bautzen , on Grünwaldgraben in the Dubringer Moor nature reserve . From Dubring, a branch of the Froschradweg (archaeological cycle path Lausitz north route) leads around Dubringer Berg ( 161  m ) to the Sunken Castle.

description

The Sunken Castle is an almost square complex, surrounded by a one meter high wall. Their dimensions are 140 m × 140 m. Its location in the moor, far away from the settlement areas, indicates its use as a refuge .

history

For a long time there has been a legend that a sunken robber baron's castle stood in the middle of the moor in the 12th and 13th centuries. The hard-hearted knight is said to have found no rest after death and his howling and complaining can still be heard from the bottom of the moor.

In 1985, ceramic shards were uncovered under the root plates of fallen trees, which could be assigned to the Billendorfer culture . Subsequent archaeological excavations showed that the Sunken Castle is a Viereckschanze, which was built around the same time as the Ostroer Schanze and the swamp ring wall at the large pond in Biehla .
