Sail plan - 30-sqm-unit cruiser / Vertenskreuzer

The Vertenskreuzer , officially designated as the 30-sqm-unit cruiser of the DSV , was designed in 1932 by the German boat builder Karl (Carl) Vertens. Up to 1959 around 20 copies were built by different shipyards . The idea of Vertens was to create an inexpensive and seaworthy cruise ship.

Vertens cruisers are still listed as traditional classes in various shipping registers, but only achieved a very low level of awareness. Because of the class symbol, a diamond on the tip, they are often referred to as diamonds with a construction number attached (for example diamonds 14 ).

The external appearance shows the typical lines of a sailing yacht between the world wars. The Vertenskreuzer neither has the extremely slim, stretched lines of the archipelago cruisers , nor the hull shape preferred for seagoing yachts with a large deck jump and raised stern , such as that found in sea cruisers.

The yachts were all as sloop rigged (Sloop), with a relatively large main sail ( mainsail ) and a rather small, 3/4 high Fock that should only improve the flow onto the main sail almost no overlap, as in those days considered optimal was viewed. In addition, the Vertenskreuzer was also sailed with a cross balloon.

The hull and deck were made of oak and / or mahogany, the iron ballast of the keel makes up about 50% of the total weight of the yacht.

Below deck, the boats were equipped with two saloon berths; beyond that, the small cabin left no room for luxury. The original construction drawings from Vertens show the standard version of the cockpit ( cockpit ) as well as the alternative of the self-draining version.

Vertenskreuzer had their distribution in the waters of Schleswig-Holstein, as well as in Berlin and on Lake Constance. There some specimens were also equipped with a modified rig and a rigged headsail ( Bodenseerigg ).
