Vertigo ultimathule is a species of snail of the family of diaper snails (Vertiginidae) from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). It is the furthest north living diaper snail species; it occurs close to the Arctic Circle in northern Norway and northern Sweden.
features
The almost cylindrical housing of Vertigo ultimathule is 2.1 to 2.2 mm high and 1.3 to 1.4 mm wide. It has 4.6 to 4.7 well-arched whorls, which are separated from one another by a deep seam. The last turn is not significantly narrowed at the base; hence the more cylindrical shape, in contrast to the more egg-shaped shape of the housings of the other Vertigo species. The shiny surface is roughly and irregularly striped. The mouth has no teeth, or at most a very small parietal denticle located deep in the mouth. The mouth edge is simple and only slightly thickened, so it tends to taper off sharply. The housing color varies from light yellow to dark yellow-brown. Viewed from the left, the outer edge of the mouth forms an obtuse angle with the navel.
Similar species
The shell of the species is reminiscent of that of the Nordic diaper snail ( Vertigo ronnebyensis (Westerlund, 1871)), but differs in the almost missing reinforcement of the mouth (3 to 4 denticles in V. ronnebyensis ), the deeper seam and the more irregular and coarser stripes . The casing is yellowish and the surface has a strong sheen (dark brown and not so shiny in V. ronnebyensis ). The case sculpture is finer and more regular in V. ronnebyensis . The case of V. ultimathule is significantly smaller than that of Vertigo extima .
Geographical distribution and habitat
So far, Vertigo ultimathule is only known from a few locations in Finnmark in the extreme northeast of Norway and in northernmost Sweden. It lives there in stream valleys and mountain slopes that are overgrown with willow bushes and birches , and which occasionally also have richer vegetation. It occurs there between 180 m and 620 m above sea level.
Taxonomy
The taxon was established in 2007 by Ted von Proschwitz . In 2010 he described new finds and specified the description.
