Treaty of Hajach

The Rzeczpospolita as a republic of three nations (Poland, Lithuania, Cossack nation).
Oath of the treaty of the Polish King John II Casimir (June 10, 1659).

The Hadjatsch Treaty was signed on September 16, 1658 in Hadjatsch in eastern Ukraine between representatives of Poland-Lithuania (S. Bieniewski and K. Jewłaszewski) and the Ukrainian Zaporozhye Cossacks ( Ivan Wyhowskyj , Jurij Nemyrytsch and Pavlo Teterja ).

The Hadjach Treaty came about a year after the death of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj , who had fought bitterly against the Polish crown and had placed Ukraine under the protection of the Russian Tsar in the Treaty of Perejaslav . Initiated by Chmelnyzkyj's successor Ivan Wyhowskyj , the treaty provided for a return of the Cossacks to the Polish-Lithuanian aristocratic republic , with the same status as Poland and Lithuania (in Polish : "Rzeczpospolita Trojga Narodów" - "Republic of Three Nations") . It was also agreed that the ecclesiastical union of Brest would be abolished and that the Orthodox Church should thus receive the same rights as the Catholic Church .

Although the treaty was ratified by the Polish Sejm , many of its decisive innovations were unilaterally deleted during the ratification, including the political autonomy of the Ruthenians and the equality of the Orthodox Church. The renewed rapprochement with Poland resulted in a bloody civil war in Ukraine, which went down in history as The Ruin ( Ukrainian Руїна ). In it, the Cossack elite, who promised themselves more privileges in the aristocratic republic, faced one another and the broad sections of the population who were pro-Russian and anti-Polish.

The implementation of the Hadjach Treaty ultimately failed because of the overthrow of Wyhowskyj, but also because of the resistance of the Polish nobility, who saw their privileges in Ukraine in danger.
