Administration building Krupp-Industrietechnik Duisburg
The former administration building of Krupp -Industrietechnik , also popularly known as the "aquarium" or "glass box", is located at Franz-Schubert-Strasse 3 in Duisburg - Rheinhausen - Mitte .
History and description
The building was constructed from concrete, glass and steel between 1962 and 1963 and expanded in 1973. In the 1960s it was considered one of the most modern office buildings in Germany. It is five-storey and mainly has open-plan offices that extend over the entire floors.
The building was near the factory gate 1 , a few hundred meters from the steelworks Rheinhausen removed for Fried. Krupp Maschinen- und Stahlbau Rheinhausen GmbH , later renamed Krupp-Industrietechnik (“KI” for short), and is one of several office buildings next to each other. It served as an administration building, among other things, for payroll accounting and for planning around the steelworks. During peak hours, it provided work for over 1,000 people. In 1993, the last blast furnace at the Rheinhausen ironworks ceased operations, and until 1996 several hundred people were still working in the building. In 2000 Krupp's ownership was transferred to a German-Dutch investor who combined it with the surrounding former Krupp office buildings in the “Business Center 2000” project. Nevertheless, the former Krupp-Industrietechnik administration building could not find a new tenant and has therefore been vacant since then.
The building contaminated with asbestos is today in a very dilapidated condition and is poorly fenced. Many panes have been smashed or given graffiti . The floors themselves are also damaged.
