The short-headed wasps ( Vespula ) are a genus from the family of the wasps (Vespidae). It includes the common wasp ( Vespula vulgaris ) and the German wasp ( Vespula germanica ), probably their best-known species. Short-headed wasps, in addition to the similar long-headed wasps ( Dolichovespula ) and hornets ( Vespa ), belong to the real wasps (Vespinae).
features
Short-headed wasps differ from the similar long-headed wasps ( Dolichovespula ) in that the distance between the lower edge of the eye and the base of the mandibles is small. The mandibles thus deflect directly below the compound eyes , which means that the cheeks are almost completely missing.
distribution
26 species are known worldwide, which are mainly distributed in the Holarctic and Oriental . 13 species occur in North America, in Europe there are four.
