Vestas Sailrocket

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vestas Sailrocket or Vestas Sailrocket 2 is the fastest sailing boat in the world. At 65.45 knots (121 km / h) it holds the world speed record for sailing vehicles , which the Australian sailor Paul Larsen set on November 24, 2012 in Walvis Bay in Namibia .

development

The Sailrocket was created in the Vestas research facility in Newport on the Isle of Wight . The boat is propelled by a wing sail attached to an outrigger. This reduces the heel (lean of the ship), which increases the pressure on the sail. The sail is also inclined at 20 degrees to the surface of the water. There is a wing on the fuselage . The record was set on a downwind course .

The Vestas Sailrocket 2 built on the Sailrocket 1 , which was damaged in an accident in 2008. The development of the boat to the world record took a total of about ten years.
