World speed record on the water
The world speed record on water is determined similarly to that on land for motorized watercraft in different classes and types. The canonizing / sanctioning organization here is the UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) in Monaco , the counterpart to the World Sailing Speed Record Council for sail-powered watercraft.
In order to set a record for the UIM in the Speed category , two attempts must be made in the opposite direction within an hour. The time is measured to cover a flying kilometer or a flying mile. The speed of the run is calculated from the time measured, and the record is then calculated from the average of the two runs. To be recognized as a new record, the speed must be at least a factor of 1.003 higher than the previous record. The records of sail-powered watercraft are only determined with one run, since a counter course would usually not be fast enough here due to the dependence on wind direction and sail position.
Other categories for UIM records are:
- Course record: Depending on the class, a certain number of laps must be driven on a course of a maximum of 6 nautical miles
- Endurance record: The average speed that is reached in 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12 or 24 hours counts. Refueling and changing drivers are allowed.
- Race records: what counts is the speed achieved during a competition with multiple boats over 3, 5, 10 or 15 nautical miles.
With the absolute speed record there are no regulations for boat and engine, otherwise the regulations for the respective boat class apply.
- The fastest driver of a motor boat is Ken Warby from Australia . On October 8, 1978, he drove his jet-powered Spirit of Australia 317.60 mph (that's 511.13 km / h ).
- The fastest driver of a propeller-driven boat is the American Dave Villwock. He drove on March 13, 2004 with the "Miss Budweiser" 220.55 mph (354.86 km / h) on Lake Oroville .
- The Vestas Sailrocket 2 achieved an average speed of 55.32 kn (102.45 km / h) over one nautical mile on November 18, 2012 , and on November 24, at 65.45 kn (121.12 km / h) world records over 500 m for the fastest sail-powered watercraft.

Development of the record for propeller-driven boats
The Slo-Mo-Shun IV boat was the last propeller-driven boat to hold the all-time speed record on the water. Since then, this record has developed as follows:
