The Vesuvius was a German steamship that was used in the colony of German East Africa .

history

The Vesuvius was built in 1875 and has been in service with the Hamburg-Blankenese Passenger & Bugsier Company since 1876. On April 11, 1884 she came to the Vulkan tugboat company in Hamburg and then to the Franz Schwalbe shipping company, also based in Hamburg. In March 1889, Vesuvius was purchased by the imperial government for use against the Arab uprising in East Africa. On June 22, 1889, the ship reached Zanzibar for use in the Wissmann fleet.

The Wissmann fleet, named after the Reich Commissioner Hermann von Wissmann , who was responsible for suppressing the uprising, was responsible for landing and supplying the German troops on the East African coast, while the Imperial Navy provided the blockade squadron, which together with British and Italian warships secured the East African coast against the smuggling of slaves of the Arabs from Africa and against the importation of weapons into East Africa for the troops of the Arabs. The tasks of the Wissmann fleet and the blockade squadron, however, mixed in the course of the uprising.

In January 1891 Vesuvius was handed over to the governorate of German East Africa. Probably in 1906 the ship was retired. Nothing is known about his whereabouts.
