Via della Libertà

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Via della Libertà , often referred to simply as Via Libertà , is one of the most elegant and expensive streets in the Sicilian capital, Palermo .

course

Via Libertà begins at the Teatro Politeama , the square is called Piazza Castelnuovo in the west and Piazza Ruggero Settimo in the east , and runs in a north-north-west direction to Piazza Vittorio Veneto . Behind the same it finds its "continuation" in a north-northwest direction through the Via della Croce Rossa , while the Via Libertà itself forms the "continuation" of the south-southeast running Via Ruggero Settimo .

history

The southern section of the road was laid out in the 18th century, and it was expanded to the north towards the end of the 19th century.

Richard Wagner , who wintered in Palermo from November 1881 to March 1882 and ended his Parsifal during this time , described the Via Libertà as the Champs-Élysées of Sicily.

In the lower part of the street, not far from its geographical center, is the Giardino Inglese .

Just a few hundred meters north of this, on January 6, 1980, the most startling crime in the history of Via Libertà happened. On that day, the then regional president of Sicily, Piersanti Mattarella , was murdered by Cosa Nostra killers in front of the house he lived in at number 147 . His younger brother Sergio , who was present at this assassination, decided to continue his older brother's life's work and went into politics himself. On January 31, 2015, he was elected President of Italy.
