The Viaducto César Gaviria Trujillo is a bridge over the Río Otun in Colombia that connects the two cities of Pereira and Dosquebradas . It is named after the former President of Colombia César Gaviria Trujillo , who comes from Pereira.

Importance for road traffic

The two large cities of Pereira and Dosquebradas lie opposite each other on the Río Otun, which forms a relatively deep valley here. Before the bridge was built, the two-lane road led down into the valley. The four-lane bridge prevented the usual traffic jams and the travel time was reduced by up to 40 minutes, which also benefits long-distance traffic between Cali and Manizales .

Construction and construction

The viaduct is a cable-stayed bridge with two A-plyons. The two pillars are 97 m and 108 m high and 211 m apart. The 72 suspension ropes are arranged in a fan system. The road is a maximum of 55 m above ground. Two lanes and a walking lane lead in each direction. The total length is 440 m. The bridge has computer-controlled sensors that detect long-term changes in the bridge geometry so that these can be compensated for by changing the rope tension.

The bridge was largely carried out by a consortium of Andrade Gutiérrez from Brazil and Walter Bau from Germany. The stay cables were built by the French company Freyssinet International and the Spanish Trenzas y Cables de Acero . At times 550 construction workers were simultaneously employed on the construction site.

safety

Due to the danger of earthquakes in Colombia, great importance was attached to the stability of the construction. The bridge is designed to withstand earthquakes up to a strength of 8 on the Richter scale . The viaduct withstood the first test on January 25, 1999, when a strong earthquake shook the area and claimed over 1,000 lives, but the bridge withstood.

There is conflicting information about the number of fatal accidents during construction work. In his inauguration speech, President Ernesto Samper named the names of six workers who had had an accident, newspaper reports spoke of seven or twelve. In addition, dozens of suicides fell from the bridge in the first few years after it opened, until the city had a protective wall built on the sides.
