Vibius sequester

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vibius Sequester was a Roman author of the 4th / 5th centuries. Century AD He wrote an alphabetical Latin lexicon on geography .

Life

Vibius Sequester, whose nickname , attested only by an inscription, is now considered certain, wrote his work, which has been handed down in a manuscript from the 9th century (Vat. Lat. 4929) as De fluminibus fontibus lacubus nemoribus paludibus montibus gentibus per litteras, less in the sense of a geographical encyclopedia than to explain Roman poets like Virgil , Lucan , Silius Italicus and Ovid . Apparently, Vibius Sequester mainly used scholia about these poets to compile his lexicon, which means that his work is particularly important as a source for older, otherwise un-preserved scholia material.
