Vice Squad (English "the moral police" ) is a punk band from Bristol , which - with a ten-year break - has existed since 1979. The band members previously played in the bands The Contingent and TV Brakes . The original band name was The Sex Aids . The singer Beki Bondage (real name Rebecca Louise Bond ) has been part of the band since it was founded in 1998.

history

Early and Riot City Era (1979–1981)

After the demise of two local punk bands, the TV Brakes and The Contingent, four former members of these groups formed the new band Vice Squad. Their first release was a contribution (entitled Nothing ) to a compilation of local bands brought out by Simon Edwards. In 1980 Vice Squad founded the record label Riot City Records with Edwards . The first EP Last Rockers was released here in 1980 . Within a short period of time, Vice Squad rose to become a nationally known band, thanks in part to the support of John Peel and Garry Bushell . Cultivating a penchant for daring outfits, Beki Bondage made the covers of the music magazines Melody Maker and Sounds and became a pin-up of punk. After the indie charts success of the second EP Resurrection , the major record company EMI took notice and signed Vice Squad and Riot City.

Vice Squad at EMI and the singer left in 1982

After Out of Reach made it to number 68 in the singles chart, a commercial success of the first album No Cause for Concern was in sight. In fact, it stayed on the charts for five weeks after it was released, even though it was recorded within just a single weekend. In October 1981 it was at number 32 on the UK charts. Still, the band was upset because, in their opinion, they had had too little influence on the production. The second LP Stand Strong, Stand Proud was prepared more carefully, even if it was released six months later. In the course of the work on the record, an EP was released that already contained some titles that had been created for the long player. After the LP was released, Vice Squad went on the first US tour.

After the EP State of the Nation , Beki Bondage left the group and formed the punk band Ligotage . She was replaced by singer Julia, with whom the band recorded the album Shot Away , which was released on Anagram and flopped.

Founded in 1997 until today

1997 Vice Squad was founded by Beki Bondage together with musicians from her band Beki and the Bombshells .
