Vicente Belmonte

Vicente "Varf" F. Belmonte, Jr. is a Filipino politician of the Liberal Party (LP), which since 2007 member of the House of Representatives is.

Life

After attending school, Belmonte completed a degree in business administration at the University of Santo Tomas , which he completed in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science (BS Major in Business Administration). He then worked as a sales representative for the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim , before he went into business for himself in 1986 and was President of VFB Corporation until June 30, 2004 .

Belmonte began his political career when he became a member of the City Council ( Sangguniang Panglungsod ) of Iligan City on July 1, 2004 and was a member of it until June 30, 2007. In the elections of May 14, 2007 he was elected for the first time for the Liberal Party (LP) as a member of the House of Representatives and initially represented the constituency of Lanao del Norte 1st District . In the elections on May 10, 2010 , he ran in the newly created constituency of Iligan City Lone District and was re-elected with 86,786 votes (92.2 percent) and was able to prevail against the non- party Samson Dajao, who received 4,550 votes (4.83 percent) Percent) were omitted.

He was re-elected in the elections on May 13, 2013 and was able to prevail against several competitors. In the current 16th legislative period, which runs from 2013 to 2016, he is chairman of the Parliament's Committee on Dangerous Drugs . He is responsible for all matters that deal directly and fundamentally with unauthorized prohibited drugs, controlled precursors and essential chemicals. In addition, the committee deals with the production, manufacture, use and trade of such substances as well as with the rehabilitation and treatment of drug addicts. On December 11, 2014, an assassination attempt was carried out on him in Laguindingan , in which three of his companions were killed. The governor of the province of Zamboanga del Sur , Antonio Cerilles , named Belmonte's commitment to drug crime as a possible background to the attack .

Since Belmonte has reached the maximum consecutive eligibility of nine years, he will not be allowed to run again in the upcoming elections on May 9, 2016 , and will therefore be eliminated from the House of Representatives. Originally, he had intended to run for the office of mayor of Iligan City , but withdrew this candidacy on November 16, 2015 in favor of his fellow party member and previous vice-mayor Ruderic Marzo.
