General Vicente Rojo

Vicente Rojo Lluch (born October 8, 1894 in Énguera , Valencia , † June 15, 1966 in Madrid ) was a Spanish general.

Rojo was raised in a church orphanage as the son of a late soldier and later entered the Toledo Infantry Academy . After graduating in 1914, as the fourth of 390 cadets, he was employed in Morocco and Catalonia . In 1936 he completed his training as a general staff officer and found employment as such in Madrid.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out that same year, he remained loyal to the Republican government and became one of its military leaders during the conflict. In 1936 he managed to stop General Emilio Mola's advance on Madrid and to organize the subsequent defense of the city. Rojo also planned the final republican offensives that led to the Battle of Teruel and the Battle of the Ebro . He was one of the four soldiers who were awarded the Placa Laureada de Madrid .

After the war he went into exile, but returned in 1958. Rojo died in Madrid on June 15, 1966.
