Victor Klemperer Competition

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Victor Klemperer Youth Competition was named after Victor Klemperer for schoolchildren, young people and adults who wanted to deal creatively with the topics of democracy and tolerance. This could be done in a variety of forms, such as essays, interviews, poems, plays, musical or other artistic forms of expression. The Victor Klemperer youth competition was advertised nationwide at schools, initiatives, youth groups and clubs.

target

In keeping with the namesake, the organizers wanted to strengthen democracy , tolerance , moral courage and open-mindedness, especially among young people. Young people were able to critically deal with current social developments or National Socialist Germany in their competition entries.

Emergence

In the 1990s, right-wing extremist riots increased sharply in Germany - initiatives against racism and violence were then launched. In 2000, the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance , the Dresdner Bank, and the Aufbau-Verlag, which published the Klemperer diaries, founded the Victor Klemperer Youth Competition, which has been advertised every year since then. ZDF had been a partner since 2002 . The competition was held for the last time in 2009.

subjects

The competition brochure contained both historical - mostly relating to National Socialism - and current issues such as globalization , human rights , immigration and integration , Jewish life in Germany today or sport - for example on the occasion of the 2006 World Cup. Also many German pop music greats such as Reamonn , Klee , Silbermond and Rosenstolz had called for democracy and tolerance in the competition brochure.

jury

The jury included other Federal Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble , the CEO of Dresdner Bank Herbert Walter and the director of ZDF Markus Schächter .
