Víctor Balaguer (born December 11, 1824 in Barcelona , † January 14, 1901 in Madrid ) was a Spanish poet and historian .

Victor Balaguer studied law , but never practiced this profession. During his studies he was mainly concerned with the history of Catalonia ; which he then thematized in many of his literary works. Over the years, Balaguer gained an excellent reputation through his specialist books that he was entrusted with the management of the state archive in Barcelona in 1854 . He was later honored with the title of Professor for History .

Since Balaguer was also politically active, he was elected to the Cortes in 1869 , where he represented Vilanova i la Geltrú . As a great speaker, his political speeches were valued and feared by friends and opponents.

In his early literary work, dramas predominated in which Balaguer thematized events and people from Catalan history or antiquity. Examples include Juan de Padilla , Coreolano and others. a. But also his poems, e.g. The anthology Lo trovador de Monserrat , for example , was enthusiastically received by the public because of its popularity. With his work La verge de Monserrat , Balaguer even gave the impetus for the long-abandoned flower festivals - Jocs Florals - to be re-established in Barcelona . In 1861 Balaguer was awarded three prizes on the occasion of these festivals.

His publications on the Catalan troubadours (including Historia politica y literaria de los trovatores ) were standard works on this topic for many years. Balaguer was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Madrid.

Víctor Balaguer died on January 14, 1901 in Madrid at the age of 76.
