Victor-Jean-François Loche

Victor-Jean-François Loche (* 1806 in Mandres , Département Seine-et-Oise , † 1863 in Algeria ) was a French naturalist and captain of the French army.

Loche took part in an expedition to explore the Algerian province of Ouargla in the northern Sahara in 1855/56 . In the process he discovered the sand cat , which he identified as previously unknown. The leader of the expedition was Capitaine Jean-Auguste Margueritte (1823-1870, stationed under the French flag in Algeria), to whom Loche gave the sand cat the scientific name Felis margarita .
