history
In the late Middle Ages there was a wooden bridge at the site. After this had become dilapidated, Bishop William Rae ordered the construction of a stone bridge, the Stockwell Bridge, around 1340 . The 3.7 m wide bridge spanned the Clyde with eight arches. In 1777 the structure was extended by three meters and two additional arches were added on the north side. By 1845 the bridge had grown to a width of 10.4 m and a length of 126 m.
Around 1850 it was decided to build a new bridge. Today's Victoria Bridge was built between 1851 and 1854 to a design by engineer James Walker . The local entrepreneur William Scott carried out the work. The total cost was £ 46,206.
