Victorius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Victorius († 480 or 488 in Rome ) was the first traditional “Count” (actually comes ) of Auvergne from 470 to 480 .

Life

Victorius was of Gallo-Roman origin. No information has been passed on about his origins and youth.

The rex of the Visigoths , Eurich (II.), Broke the foedus with the Western Roman government in 468 and gradually conquered all areas between the Loire and the Pyrenees that were still under imperial rule . In the Auvergne, on the other hand, he encountered bitter resistance, which was ultimately also broken. Since Eurich had renounced the powerless government in Ravenna, but by no means waged war against the Romans as such, he appointed the Roman Victorius, who had the title of a dux , as "governor". During his nine-year tenure, Victorius had several churches built, expanded and decorated.

Victorius was personally friends with Bishop Sidonius Apollinaris of Clermont . Sidonius, who himself held high secular offices, extensively praises comes Victorius, his patron in secular and his son in ecclesiastical matters , in a letter from the year 477 and describes him as a pious and compassionate man.

Gregory of Tours, on the other hand, who lived about a century later, describes Victorius as comes who, on the basis of all kinds of accusations, had the distinguished Eucherius imprisoned and executed. Allegedly because of his dissolute love life, Victorius 480 had to flee from the angry Auvergners to Rome. He did not change his way of life, which is why he was stoned in Rome.
