Video processor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a video processor is called image processors , for example, in consumer electronics perform image processing devices.

Here, among these processors various tasks ( decoding of MPEG-2 - and MPEG-4 - data streams , deinterlacing , scaling and usually also the audio decoding) taken. However, not all processors named in this way master all the necessary processing steps. Since most image processors are rather cheap mass-produced goods that are built into every cheap DVD player or television receiver (and also in all projectors, LCD and plasma televisions ), their capabilities are rather mediocre and the image quality achieved can at best be described as average.

A special group of image processors are the video display controllers or graphics processors , which do not directly convert or improve a video signal, but instead generate visible information from abstract information (text, binary stored image).

tasks

Since the very complex task of high-quality deinterlacing (generating so-called progressive scan full images from the fields of the still usual field process when transmitting TV signals) overwhelms most of the built-in image processors of the end devices, so-called external video processors have become particularly popular in the home cinema sector enforced. These video processors work with significantly more powerful (and therefore significantly more expensive) processors. Compared to the rudimentary image processors of the mass market (example: AMD Xilleon , ST Microelectronics ST7100, SigmaDesigns 86xx, Panasonic UniPhier, etc.), highly specialized processors are used here that focus exclusively on deinterlacing, scaling and the elimination of noise, macroblocking and compression artifacts restrict.

They are characterized by their ability to master real pixel-based-motion-adaptive-four-field deinterlacing instead of the usual deinterlacing processes ( bobbing , weaving , skip field , blending and motion adaptive ) - by far the most valuable deinterlacing method , with a correspondingly good visual impression. And they scale (interpolate) much sharper and cleaner without adding artifacts. Even among these processors there are still differences in quality, but these are rather small compared to the previously mentioned mass market processors.
