Lanark Cattle Market

The Lanark Cattle Market is a former covered market in the Scottish town of Lanark in the Council Area of South Lanarkshire . In 1980 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. The former gateway, however, is classified as a monument of the highest category A. A similar building is the Castle Douglas Livestock Market .

description

The hall is off Hyndford Road in the southeast of Lanark. The octagonal building dates from the later 19th century. The polished natural stone surrounds are set apart from the layered masonry . Piers stretch along the edges. With the exception of three, all of the eight sides have semicircular, now partly blind, windows with flanking round windows. The entrance area on the east side is designed with a canopy. The building closes with a slate roof . In the center there is a small lantern with a weather vane .

In 2009, the Livestock Market Hall was added to the Register of Endangered Landmarks in Scotland. In 2014, however, his condition was classified as good with a simultaneous low risk.

Gate access

Today's gate approach presumably once delimited the tollbooth of the nearby Cartland Bridge . After the toll was lifted in the 1880s, it could have been moved to its current location. The gate consists of both cast and wrought iron elements. The cast-iron goal posts have a square layout. They are equipped with plaques, quatrefoil decorated and foliage ornaments and close with curved domes. A decorative ribbon with quatrefoils runs along the suspended two-winged gate. It closes with pointed elements. Quarry stone walls continue on both sides .
