Internal multi-tooth profile

XZN ( triple-square ) is the name for a star-shaped and twelve-point internal multi-tooth profile for screw head drives .

General

The internal multi-tooth profile has twelve right-angled teeth. The cross-sectional shape can be created by placing three squares of the same size on top of each other rotated by 30 ° each. This explains the English name triple square .

The XZN profile is particularly popular in the automotive industry, as it can be used to transmit a relatively high torque to the screws. A high tightening torque is necessary for cylinder head screw connections, for example . To avoid damaging the thread , the torque specified by the manufacturer must be observed when tightening such screws. Due to the fine toothing and the slightly conical shape, contamination of the profile can make it difficult to fully insert the tool. Wear of the toothing can (more than with the coarser Torx profile) lead to the tool jumping over, which quickly makes the screw head or drive unusable.

Despite the expiry of the patents in the 1990s, multi-point screws are often replaced by the less sensitive Torx profile.

Screws

The dimensions for the production of screws with internal serration are specified in DIN standard 34824 "Internal serration for screws".

The execution of screws is for example in the DIN standards:

  • DIN 34821 "Cheese head screws with internal serration with thread up to the head",
  • DIN 34822 "Cheese head screws with flange with internal serration with thread up to the head" and
  • DIN 34823 “raised countersunk head screws with internal serration” specified.

Common sizes are 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12.

Tool

XZN bit

The specifications for the production of tools for screws with internal multi-tooth profile are, for example, in the DIN standards:

  • DIN 2324 "Screwdriver bits with internal square for screws with internal multi-point, hand-operated",
  • DIN 2325 "Screwdrivers for screws with internal serrations - screwdriver tips, gauges and test bodies for torque testing" and
  • DIN 65253 "Offset screwdriver for screws with internal serration" specified.

Tools for internal multi-tooth profiles are available as L- brackets , bits , 38- inch or 12- inch socket wrenches ( sockets ). Individual manufacturers use different multi-tooth profiles to force special tools for handling.
