The Vienna Symphonic Library ( Engl. For the Vienna Symphonic Library ) is a in Vienna based firm with the aim of orchestral music , their instruments and performance halls original as possible for use in personal computers to recycle. To do this , sound engineers sample individual instruments and groups of instruments (including individual voices and choirs) and prepare them for use on a PC. With the help of specially developed software, these sounds can be reproduced by the user with different playing styles and articulations . The Vienna Symphonic Library has made a special name for itself by digitally recreating the acoustics of famous Viennese concert halls with the technology of the folding hall .

history

Herbert Tucmandl during the first tests of the Vienna Symphonic Library (2004)

The company was founded in October 2000 by Herbert Tucmandl in Vienna. The former cellist (inter alia substitute with the Vienna Philharmonic ), later cameraman, director and composer, used orchestral sample libraries available at the time for composing his own film scores in the 1990s, which did not convince him in terms of sound. He came up with a concept of what a complete, realistic sounding orchestral sample library should look like. One of his research results was that a library should not only consist of individual samples, but also of sound connections (e.g. legato ) and repetitions of sounds (repetitions). He tried out his concept himself with the cello and convinced an investor with the sound results.

A separate recording hall, the so-called Silent Stage , was built in Ebreichsdorf (Lower Austria) to record the orchestra samples . Samples were recorded almost every day until the end of 2016. Most of the musicians come from various Viennese orchestras. In 2013 the Vienna Symphonic Library took over the historic, listed synchronous hall on the premises of the Rosenhügel film studios from the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation . After renovation work, the entire company relocated to the new location, the Synchron Stage Vienna , in spring 2016 .

The first products came on the market in December 2002. The “First Edition” consisted of the modules “Strings”, “Brass & Woodwinds”, “Percussion” and the “Performance Set”. In the summer of 2003 the “Pro Edition” followed with double the amount of samples. Both editions were offered in formats for the software samplers TASCAM GigaStudio and Apple Logic EXS24 (at that time still Emagic). From the end of 2003, smaller packages of the "Horizon Series" followed, which were also available in formats for Steinberg Halion and Native Instruments Kontakt. The first small software development was the MIDI utility “Performance Tool”, with the help of which legatas and repetitions could be played in real time.

Even experts can hardly distinguish music productions that were made with the help of VSL products from recordings with a real orchestra. Some competing products also achieved this technical breakthrough in terms of authenticity.

In order to be able to manage the large amount of samples in a more user-friendly manner, a separate sample player was developed, the “Vienna Instruments” player. The “Vienna Instruments Collections” published from autumn 2005 contain the free player that runs in the formats AU, VST, AAX Native and RTAS under Mac OS X and Windows. Further software developments followed: the network-compatible mixing host “Vienna Ensemble PRO”, the effects plug-in bundle “Vienna Suite”, and the mixing and reverberation software “Vienna MIR PRO”.

Since the summer of 2012, the sound libraries have no longer been delivered on DVDs, but exclusively via download or on data carriers (USB stick or hard disk).

In April 2017 the release of the first product, the “Synchron Percussion I”, took place in the large hall of the Synchron Stage Vienna. 16 orchestral percussion instruments from our own percussion store were recorded in Stage A with a phase-controlled multi-microphone setup in order to capture the sound character of the individual instruments and their natural surround sound. With "Synchron Percussion I", the Vienna Symphonic Library is the first sample library in the world to offer its instrument library in Auro-3D in addition to stereo and surround .
