Synchron Stage Vienna
The Synchron Stage Vienna is a recording studio complex in a historic studio building, which is specially designed for the recording of orchestral instruments and film music. The building is located in Hall 6, which is under monument protection, on the site of the former Rosenhügel film studios in Vienna and is operated by the Vienna Symphonic Library .
history
As part of the Rosenhügel film studios, the recording studio shared their history until the mid-1950s. Up to this point in time, up to 10 film music per year with a large orchestra was recorded in the synchronous hall. The preserved, three-manual "Lenkwil" cinema organ still bears witness to its original use for film scoring. In addition to many percussion registers, it also has sound effects such as B. rumbling thunder, car horns, galloping horses, chirping birds or the sound of the sea.
In the mid-sixties, the area was finally sold to the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation , during which time there was also a phase of revitalization. Well-known artists such as Karl Böhm , Herbert von Karajan , Yehudi Menuhin or Mstislaw Rostropowitsch discovered the high quality acoustics of the hall and used them for their recordings.
In the summer of 2013, the Viennese company Vienna Symphonic Library bought the listed synchronous hall on the grounds of the Vienna Rosenhügel film studios and renovated the historic property. The renovation work began in 2014 and transformed this synchronous hall into a modern studio complex. The Synchron Stage Vienna combines sophisticated acoustics with modern recording technology and can therefore meet very high sound demands.
The first recordings took place in October 2015 under the direction of the composer, orchestrator and conductor Conrad Pope , with Dennis S. Sands, who is internationally active in large studio projects, acted as recording manager.
Shortly after the official opening, the Synchron Stage Vienna was booked by Remote Control Productions , Hans Zimmer's production company , for several projects. Orchestra recordings were made for the movie " Inferno " (director: Ron Howard , music: Hans Zimmer) and the Netflix series " The Crown " developed by Peter Morgan ("The Queen") (music: Hans Zimmer and Rupert Gregson- Williams ).
In March 2016, the Vienna Symphonic Library and its offices were relocated to the new building complex.
Company profile
The Synchron Stage Vienna is a special recording studio (scoring stage) because the studio is not only used for the production of sound recordings, but also for the development of audio software. The large recording hall (Stage A) offers space for up to 130 musicians and is surrounded by additional studio and office space: Another recording room (Stage B), the two control rooms A and B, several lounges, individual booths ("Iso Booths"), and instrument storage and music archive. The technical requirement lies in the flexibility of this facility, so that every single room, including the offices, can be connected to any other room without any loss of sound quality. Modular configurations can be adapted to special requirements. Film composers in particular can play in complete works ( scores ) or have their symphonic sketches refined on the computer by real orchestras. The additional connection of the Scoring Stage with the innovative software developments of the Vienna Symphonic Library is also considered to be unique worldwide.
The basement provides space for an instrument store where pianos and percussion instruments are kept. The ventilation system provides all rooms with the same room climate as the reception hall, in order to ensure that they can be used quickly for productions. A lift connects the instrument store directly with Stage A. In addition to three concert grand pianos , a Steinway D-274 , a remotely controllable Bösendorfer 290 Imperial with CEUS reproduction system and a Yamaha Disklavier CFX EN PRO, up to 200 different percussion instruments are available for recordings.
With the help of the CEUS system from Bösendorfer, dynamic sequences of mechanical movements of keys and mechanics ranging from pianissimo to fortissimo can be recorded in detail and reproduced at a later point in time. This range of functions also applies to the Yamaha Disklavier. This results in different possible uses, such as the recording and subsequent correction of individual notes or the revision of the timing. A pianist can also play a piano piece for four hands by accompanying himself in a second take. A piano recording that was recorded in another location in the world can also be played back and recorded on the two reproducing concert grand pianos in Stage A.
