Vietnamese in the Czech Republic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vietnamese people in the Czech Republic make up for the Ukrainians and Slovaks the third largest foreign population in the Czech Republic . According to official statistics, Vietnamese citizens make up 0.54 percent of the population, about 56,000 people. It is assumed that unofficially there are significantly more Vietnamese in the Czech Republic. An estimate by ARTE speaks of around 200,000 Vietnamese. The Vietnamese minority should not be seen as an isolated group, but rather closely linked to the Vietnamese in Germany and Poland through intra-European migration .

history

Cooperation between the two countries was agreed in several agreements between Czechoslovakia and Vietnam from the 1950s onwards. It was also part of the fact that some, mainly male, Vietnamese could come to Czechoslovakia as workers, apprentices and students. In the 1970s and 1980s in particular, recruitment efforts for workers were intensified. By employing workers, the Vietnamese state partially paid off its debts. However, an integration of this group was expressly not desired, which is why the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic tended to isolate itself from the outside world. With the transformation process as a result of the fall of 1989, the legal status of the migrant group became uncertain. In the following years, many had to leave the country or acquire other residence permits. Despite the legal uncertainties, many Vietnamese came to the Czech Republic during this time and had to leave Germany. In the meantime, a generation of Vietnamese who were born and raised there also live in the Czech Republic. To this day, however, the Vietnamese are continuously moving to the Czech Republic.

economy

Many Vietnamese are employed in wholesaling and retailing , gastronomy and simple service companies such as hairdressing salons and nail salons, which are mostly also in Vietnamese hands. There are some independent Vietnamese retail chains in the Czech Republic, for example in the business and cultural center of Sapa in Prague there are several wholesale stores, from which many Vietnamese small businesses purchase their goods. The Vietnamese retail stores are represented almost everywhere in the Czech Republic and offer basic retail supplies in some structurally weak rural regions.
