Viktor Hälg

Viktor Hälg OSB (born November 12, 1906 in Kirchberg SG as Anton Hälg , † November 29, 1975 in Feldkirch ) was a Swiss missionary benedictine and abbishop of Ndanda in Tanzania .

Life

Anton Hälg entered the novitiate of the Benedictine Archabbey of Sankt Ottilien in 1927 and received the religious name of St. Viktor and made his profession on November 5, 1928 . He was ordained a priest on March 6, 1932. Archabbot Chrysostomus Schmid sent Father Viktor to the mission to East Africa in 1933 , where he was successively rector of the teachers' college in Ndanda (Tanzania), in 1939 vicar general of the abbey diocese and in 1942 prior of the abbey. In early 1949 he was appointed by Pope Pius XII. as coadjutor bishop of Abbot Bishop Joachim Ammann and titular bishop of Baia . His episcopal ordination took place on June 29, 1949 by the missionary bishop Edgar Aristide Maranta OFMCap. On December 15, 1949, Viktor Hälg succeeded his predecessor Ammann as Abbot Ordinary of Private Ndanda Abbey.

With the elevation of Private Abbey Ndanda to the Diocese of Mtwara on December 18, 1972, Abbot Bishop Viktor gave its leadership to the local clergy, but kept the leadership of the Benedictine Abbey of Ndanda. Viktor Hälg died in 1975 at the age of 69 as a result of a traffic accident.

Abbot Bishop Hälg took part in all four sessions of Vatican II as a council father .
