Chrysostom Schmid

Chrysostomus Schmid OSB (born February 3, 1883 in Westendorf as Blasius Schmid , † September 28, 1962 in St. Ottilien ) was a German Benedictine monk and archabbot of the Archabbey of St. Ottilien .

Career

Schmid attended high school near St. Stephan in Augsburg. In 1903 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of St. Ottilien. He studied philosophy and theology in Munich and Rome and received his doctorate in 1908 at the Benedictine College Sant'Anselmo . On July 26, 1908, he was ordained a priest in Augsburg .

From 1912 he was a teacher at the seminary of the St. Ottilien monastery and translated works by Savinien Louismet into German. From 1922 to 1930 he stayed as prior in Tokwon Abbey (Korea). On June 17, 1930, he was elected abbot coadjutor of Archabbot Norbert Weber by the electoral chapter and consecrated abbot on August 10, 1930 by Auxiliary Bishop Johann Baptist Schauer from Munich. After Norbert Weber's resignation in 1931, Chrysostomus Schmid became Archabbot of St. Ottilien and at the same time head of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien . The first years of his reign were marked by missionary trips to North America, Venezuela and East Africa. In 1941 the monks were expelled from St. Ottilien by the Gestapo . After the end of the war, Schmid regained his scattered community and re-established monastic life in St. Ottilien in 1948. On May 15, 1957, he resigned from the office of ruling archabbot. Chrysostomus Schmid lived in the monastery of St. Vinzenz in Dießen for the following years until 1961.
