Vilhelm Bergsøe (born February 8, 1835 in Copenhagen , † June 26, 1911 ibid) was a Danish novelist , naturalist and numismatist .

Vilhelm Bergsøe was the son of the administrator of the royal porcelain factory, studied medicine for two years at the University of Copenhagen from 1854, then natural sciences, especially zoology, and went to Italy in 1862, where he researched the fauna of the Mediterranean in Messina and made interesting observations about the parasites of the swordfish made.

After his return he published the monograph Philichthys Xiphiae (Copenhagen 1864) on the latter , followed by an extensive work: On the Italian tarantula and tarantism in the Middle Ages and more recently (Copenhagen 1865). Continuous use of the microscope gave him severe inflammation of the eyes, as a result of which he became completely blind for a time and felt compelled to give up his career as a natural scientist.

With doubled zeal he now turned to literary activity, first dictating the cycle of novels Fra Piazza del Popolo (1866, 4th edition 1880; German by Adolf Strodtmann , Berlin 1870), which caused a great sensation, and left the same his first collection of poems: J Ny og Nae ( Dann und wann , Berlin 1867), follow.

During a second stay in Rome (1868), where he found a partial cure for his eye disease, he wrote the novel Fra den gamle Fabrik ( From the old factory , 3rd ed. 1879; German, 2nd ed., Leipzig 1874), memories from his youth, which did not match the previous one in terms of fantastic power, but are more mature in form and content. The somewhat broad novel I Sabinerbjergene (1871; German: Im Sabinergebirge , Bremen 1872) continued the series; then followed: Bruden fra Rørvig (1872; German: The bride of Rörvig , Berlin 1872); Gjengangerfortællinger (1873; German: Gespensternovellen , Berlin 1873); Italienske Noveller (1874; German, Leipzig 1876) and the last novellist work: Hvem var han? (Who was he?), The only one that he wrote down himself, and which is therefore the finest and finest.

Rich imagination, his observation and brilliant presentation characterize these novels and also leave his lyrical poems far behind in terms of originality. Two collections of the latter appeared: Hjemvee ( Heimweh , 1872) and Blomstervignetter ( flower vignettes ). In the work Rome under Pius den Niende (1874–1879), to which he made his studies during a third stay in Rome in 1872, he depicts papal Rome as the focus of ultramontanism using pictures by French artists ; In Fra Mark og Skov: billeder af Insekternes Liv ( From Field and World , 1880, 3 parts), a collection of earlier descriptions of natural history, he gives popular depictions of the life of insects.

He published a work on the Danish medals Danske Medailler og Jetons fra 1789-1891 for the numismatic forening . Copenhagen 1893, reprint 1978.
