Viljo Vesterinen

Viljo "Vili" Vesterinen (born March 26, 1907 in Terijoki , † May 18, 1961 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish accordion player and composer .

Vesterinen studied piano and cello in Vyborg , but taught himself to play the accordion. He played in various orchestras in the early years of his career. He made the first recordings in 1929. His biggest hit in 1939 was Säkkijärven polkka . Although the composition was not his own, this version remained the most popular interpretation. Other well-known pieces are Metsäkukkia (1931), Hilpeä hanuri (1936) and Valssi menneiltä ajoilta (1939). Vesterinen recorded a total of 130 records. Alcohol problems and the effects of heavy smoking overshadowed the later years of his career,

Vesterinen also appeared in some movies. The film Säkkijärven polkka (1955) tells his life.
