The Villa Fantastica is a publicly accessible private library in the 13th Viennese district Hietzing . It was founded in 2010 by Helmuth W. Mommers , who has headed it since October 4, 2011.

In accordance with the statutes of the supporting foundation, the library collects all science fiction works published in German - literature in all editions, from the bound luxury edition to the novel booklet .

In addition, works of fantasy , fantasy and horror literature , insofar as they contain supernatural elements, are also incorporated into the inventory on a large scale . In addition, the original editions in English and, to a smaller extent, literature in other languages ​​are also collected.

The collection mandate also includes secondary literature and magazines. Films on DVD and Blu-ray as well as audio books can also be found in the holdings. For the library, it does not matter whether the work comes from a self-publisher or from a publisher.

The library relies exclusively on donations from collectors, visitors, publishers and authors . Books and media are not purchased.

Villa Fantastica manages the holdings of the Science Fiction Foundation founded by Helmuth W. Mommers . In the interests of the foundation, the library serves to promote interest in fantastic literature. For this reason, membership and rental are free for visitors.

At its current stage, as of spring 2014, the library is only partially expanded. Upon completion, extensive activities in the sense of the contract are to be set: readings by the authors , lectures, events, an own book series, support for school libraries.

Location and status

The library is located in a villa in the cottage district of Hietzing in Vienna. In the final stage, all four floors of the building will be used for library purposes. At the moment, one floor is used entirely and a second floor is used in parts. The extensive renovation and adaptation of the villa is in the planning stage.

As of May 2014, the total number of works recorded in an online database was around 43,000 books and novel booklets as well as 1,800 films and 100 audio books.

Helmuth W. Mommers received the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize in the Special Prize category in 2012 and the German Fantasy Prize in 2014 for founding the Villa Fantastica.
