The Villa Grimaldi was an area in Santiago de Chile where opposition members of the Pinochet dictatorship were tortured from 1975 to 1988 . At least 4,500 people were tortured there, and 241 of them were killed or have disappeared to this day. Today there is the so-called "Park for Peace" ( Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi ), which functions as a memorial.

The almost one hectare property on Avenida José Arrieta 8200 in Comuna La Reina belonged to a wealthy Chilean family. In 1973 the family handed it over to the army , which in return released a captured daughter of the family. From mid-1974, the Brigada de Inteligencia Metropolitana (BIM), the capital department of the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA) secret police , used the site as their command center and as a torture center. Internally, the complex was called Cuartel Terranova (Newfoundland Barracks). In addition to various secret prisons in and outside of Santiago such as Londres 38 (also called Yucatán ), Irán 3037 (called Venda Sexy ), José Domingo Cañas , Colonia Dignidad , Estadio Nacional and the sailing training ship Esmeralda , Villa Grimaldi was one of the most important and notorious torture sites of the DINA. After the dissolution of DINA, the area was handed over to the Central Nacional de Informaciones (CNI) in 1977 , which continued to torture there. In 1988 the site was handed over to the CNI boss Hugo Salas Wenzel as a cover-up and personal enrichment .

A woman captured in January 1975 relates the torture at Villa Grimaldi:

“I realized with horror that they knew about every single step I took. ... they told me countless times that I disappeared without leaving the slightest trace and that I would never see my two sons again. They knew their names, the school they went to and their timetables. "

A man captured in December 1975 relates the torture at Villa Grimaldi:

“... they brutally beat me for several minutes with their fists, feet and hard objects in front of my wife and my mother. My mother was taken away (she was later released) and the abuse continued on my wife. Confused by our silence, he ordered, "To 'the grill' [la parilla]"… They let me hear my wife's torture for half an hour. ... they tore my clothes off my body, took me to a room with metal bed frames, tied me to one of them, made cables and electrodes with hooks and nails on my feet, hands, nose, ears, gums, anus, penis and the Testicles and began to torture me with electricity that they generated with a crank generator. "

- Final report of the “Comisión Nacional de Prisón Política y Tortura”, 2005, p. 245

Today the privately financed Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi (Park for Peace) is located on the site . The concept of the memorial corresponds to the official direction of the culture of remembrance in Chile. Instead of a comprehensive memorial (there are a few memorial plaques) a park and a stage for cultural events have been built.

Sabían sus nombres, los colegios donde iban, los horarios de entrada y salida. Yo no lo podía creer. "
