The Esmeralda (ID: BE-43) is a Chilean sailing training ship .
history
The Esmeralda was originally laid down as Don Juan de Austria on behalf of the Spanish Navy . The ship was completely destroyed by a major fire at the shipyard, the shipyard was insolvent and the Spanish government took over the financing of the reconstruction. Finally it was built for the Chilean Navy as Esmeralda and put into service because Spain could not repay the accumulated debts for saltpetre deliveries from Chile and suggested deliveries of goods as compensation. The ship is the sixth ship of the Chilean Navy of that name. It undertook numerous training trips (span. "Cruceros de Instrucción"), which it led to ports in all parts of the world. In addition, the Esmeralda also took part in several tall ship regattas.
She is the sister ship of the Spanish four-masted topsail schooner Juan Sebastián de Elcano . In contrast to this one, which has four main gaff sails, the Esmeralda has only had square and staysail on the foremast since 1970, no longer a schooner gaff sail, which is why it can be described as a four-masted barkentine, although the foremast with the three square-top sails and the wide jib are more like that of a square schooner remembered who she once was.
Torture ship under Pinochet
After the 1973 military coup against the government of Salvador Allende , the Esmeralda was used as a torture ship for opponents of the regime under dictator Pinochet in the port of Valparaíso . The ship was later put back into service by the Chilean government. Due to its use as a prison ship, which was also used for torture and killing, numerous governments subsequently refused the ship to enter their territorial waters. Since the end of the military dictatorship in Chile, this boycott against the Esmeralda has ended.
